curious about cats

During my housesitting adventure this last week I took the opportunity to introduce Ellie to cats.

She had been around them before but not for a prolonged period of time. Last week she spent 3 days and nights with two cats. Happily, she's not any worse for wear.

She's mostly curious about them. Mr. Peanut did hide in the basement the whole time but FiFi was in the living space with us. Neither cat has claws so I was not worried about them scratching Ellie if they did happen to get unhappily close to each other.

Ellie and FiFi would have a stare-off from across the room and if FiFi budged then Ellie would charge toward her and bark. She wasn't aggressive, but it would always surprise FiFi and she would hiss and yowl at Ellie and run away. Ellie would totter back to the couch pleased with herself.

Whenever Ellie would get within three feet of FiFi she would hiss and arch her back and Ellie would stop where she was, always reaching her sniffing nose as close as she could.

When FiFi would vacate her space on the couch or under the table, Ellie was quick to go over and sniff the entire location and then watch FiFi saunter away.

The last day I stayed at the house I was able to get Ellie on one side of the and FiFi on the other side of me so I could pet them at the same time. That's as close as FiFi would get without yowling, though she remained cautious and eyeballed Ellie the whole time.

And FiFi did jump on the bed in the middle of the night, but when Ellie poked her head up out of the covers she jumped down.

Ellie just wanted to be friends with the cat, is that so horrible?

Working hard, iPad style

This summer I became part of the work-at-home population. I find that I don't mind it so much, but I really do miss the social I-see-people-at-work part. The solitude is nice, we all know this about me, but after about three days in a row of working at home, I get super restless and, so help me, I have to get out of the house.

I have always been comfortable and productive while working at a kitchen table. It's been this way for as long as I can remember. And I'm good with it. But my iMac is not good with it. You see, it's not so portable.

On a side note, if I could go back to my 25 year old self I say, “Self? I know you think you're doing the right thing by not getting a laptop, I get it. But do yourself a favor and get one anyway. I promise you'll love it. And your 28 year-old-self with love you for it. Mmkay? Thanks.”

Since I didn't want two hard drives, etc., I picked up and iPad and keyboard as soon as I realized that's what I had been wanting/looking for/waiting for since I got my iMac. (see previous paragraph.)

I take this baby with me everywhere. It fits in my purse, which is not one of those Mary Poppins-esc carpet bags. (Though I did have one of those for a while and it totally rocked my socks.) I do web-surfing, note taking, article writing, calendar keeping, email checking, blog posting, fantasy baseball maintaining, news reading and time wasting work on this thing. I keep a hefty stash of AAA batteries on hand for when the keyboard dies so I don't have to type on the glass, heaven forbid.

So while I work really well at the kitchen table, I've been able to discover that I also work pretty well in coffee shops, diners, at the park, in the library, on the couch while watching a baseball game and in bed with Ellie snuggled next to me.

Because, seriously, does it get much better than this? I think not.

The last picture I took of Ellie before dropping her off at her new temporary home. I snuggled her a lot.  I surely do miss her.

This week involved lots of down time on the couch.  just.plain.tired. These 3 days off work will certainly be nice for me.

Saw a few really nice sunrises through dirty car windows this week.  Spring always improves my outlook.  I feel more hope, more energy, more motivation.  February and March are hard months for me.  I'm glad it's almost May.

I'm off work today, hooray!  I'll be busy crossing lots of past due items off my list so I can get going on the new list which continues to grow.  Included in that list?  Cleaning out and organizing pictures, some mending, a blog makeover (maybe?), finish my book, and some fun picture taking.  Including a run in there somewhere.

I'm determined to feel good about myself on Sunday evening instead of wondering why I even bother taking a day off if I'm not gonna do anything with it.  Time to get my butt in gear and be productive.

Changes underfoot.  And I like it.

Last week I received notice from my apartment management that my neighbor has been bothered by my dog's barking during the day.  The lease agreement states that if my pet bothers my neighbors I have 10 days to permanently remove the pet from the property.  And I had 72 hours to respond to management.

I have found myself fortunate enough to have quality friends who are willing and able to step in to help me find an alternative living arrangement for Ellie.  She stayed with the normal dog sitter while I was in Boston and for the next few days.  This weekend I will be taking Ellie to her new home.  She will stay there at least until January when my lease is up and I will be looking for new housing that will accommodate the both of us.

I'm incredibly sad that this apartment has not turned out to be a long term place for me and Ellie.  Since it is not something I am able to fix right now, it is what it is and I have to deal with it.

I have to say, coming home is just not as fun as it used to be.

Knit is tricky to sew with.  Even more so when the pattern pieces are knit.

I still procrastinate things I don't want to do.  I need to grow out of that one.

A straight line from Salt Lake City to Boston is 2000 miles.

I received 2,629 text messages last billing cycle.

It's been a while since too many thoughts kept me up at night.  It was relieving to know I still have that ability, it's not dead up there.

I work best when there is a big long list with too many things to do.

If I just pay a bit more attention on a consistent basis I can run my finances and not be run by them.

I still enjoy coloring.

Chicken really is more boring than sushi.

I still like naps in the afternoon.

Cookies for breakfast is awesome.

I like when Ellie takes a nap in my lap.
